For the last event of the series and ultimately the most important of them all, all the universities hailed down to Bristol for Nationals. As people unpacked, they were rushed back out of the houses straight down to Kings Street to enjoy the night at Kongs. Over a couple of pints, high scores were made on all the arcade machines. However, the competitive edge was left for the Saturday windsurfing.
Rise and shine and windsurfers managed to make it to Bowmoor Lake at 9:30am. And the BUCS competitions started. All individual races for the Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner categories. Having over 30 windsurfers on the water for each of the heats!
Saturday night meant space theme night! All the windsurfers commenced the start of the pub crawl at the WG Grace all adorned in their space-themed costumes. Trekking down towards SWX most of the costumes made it to the club. Then started the silent disco for those that found it as we are sure we didn’t see many of the Southampton green aliens finding their way to the room.
Sunday morning was a major hangover recovery as people discovered how much of their space costumes survived the night out. Leaving Bristol at a leisurely fashion, windsurfing resumed on the lake with competitions in team racing and freestyle.
To finish off the weekend we have the Bristol Classic Jelly Wrestling! This year was a slight twist with slime. This added a new factor of being super slippy. When the wrestling started there wasn’t much to see as the competitors were just not able to grip anything. However, the paddling pool could not cope as Nat (UWE) vs Will (Exeter) led to the first tear, over the next few fights leading to the pool being completely ripped apart. The only damage to not was a large amount of bruising to Will (Bristol) from Jason (Bristol) as there were a few tight grabs.
Thank you to everyone coming to the event and enjoying another successful Nationals at Bristol! Thank you to the Bristol committee and the SWA for organising such a great event and devoting their time to make things run smoothly. Big thanks to our sponsors at Monster keeping us all energised and staying super sendy over the whole weekend, and to Boardwise for coming down, and supplying kit for us to race on. Thanks to Bowmoor for allowing us to host such a great event at their lake. See you all next year.
