First time wave competitors and pros alike gathered at midday for the start of the heats. The current series leader SJ (Steve Jarvis) opened up his first heat throwing a forward, just off the beach, followed with a combination of front and backside riding, setting the bar sky high for the rest of the competition. The battle commenced, out in the depths of the bay, where head-high sets were rolling in making for some gutsy wave choices. Do or die riding provided classic entertainment for the spectators, plenty of near misses and wipe-outs were seen in the challenging wave conditions.  As the day progressed Matt Yeates also bust-out a forward in his first heat, eager to prove that he would not be outdone. He easily sailed through his heat showing some smooth backside wave-riding.

Some of the new guys had a great session in their respective heats, Angus Webb was back-side shredding some shore break in the upwind section. His enthusiasm eventually earning him the ‘shore dump surfer’ award, for spectacularly catapulting into the beach.

The second round saw the clouds gather, the wind strengthen and the downwind section start to produce some logo-high waves. The competitors powered off the ramps for an inspiring display of loops and the odd attempted ponch.  Will Lama, German Joe, Matt Yeates and SJ knocked away all competition ready for the high-octane final.

Matt, usually known for his freestyle abilities was a fierce competitor in the waves. With an impressive transition of disciplines he fought hard matching SJ’s waves throughout the heat, on one occasion they simultaneously ripped-up the same steep face turn by turn. However in the end it was SJ’s wave selection and fluidity on the wave that secured him the win.

The event demonstrated just how versatile Rhosneigr can be.  The conditions were absolutely ideal for beginner wave sailing at one part of the bay and the more skilled windsurfers could hunt for larger peaks further out.  Apparently, this was just an average day, but this was, hands down, the best spot I have been to so far this year.  Funsport is perfectly situated; it has a convenient grassy rigging area and the guys there are really welcoming - no wonder Ben Proffit and Phil Horrocks are regular visitors.  As always, the student population had a dabble in the local night life, North wales being a location they had never explored.  Needless to say they relished the opportunity to get involved in some fancy dress and the ‘interesting’ Welsh culture.

Further to the wave event, Bangor and Birmingham organised some intermediate and beginner sailing at the adjacent lake for the up-and-coming student windsurfers.  Big thanks to all of the Bangor and Birmingham committee members for organising such a fantastic event, hosting other SWA members and for sharing such a fantastic location.
