As the wind built from nothing to an acceptable breeze windsurfers were split into teaching groups dependant on ability, and after a brief but useful bit of instruction, got out on the water as soon as possible. Dedicated instructors, assisted by the clubs old hands and aspiring instructors, windsurfed, paddled, and power boated around dispensing useful advice and tips to really help ardent beginners progress. Meanwhile intermediates tried out new moves on new boards, looking to better their skills.
After a solid afternoons windsurfing, everyone hit the showers and got warm for a delicious chilli or bolognaise, cooked up in advance by dedicated club members. As the darkness fell, the home-brewed cider was unveiled to keep everybody warm, bolstered by various bottles individuals had brought with them. As the night drew on, guitars became evident and alcohol driven singing kept everyone entertained. As tiredness got the better of even the most resolute, tent floors provided a much needed sleeping place.
The Sunday morning began in fine student windsurfing style with bacon and tea, as the glass flat lake was observed with disappointment. The Lakes staff provided encouragement though, with an 18 knot forecast for the afternoon. As the wind started to build once more, the intermediates were given time on the simulator getting used to wearing a harness, in many cases for the first time. As soon as it there was enough wind, everyone hit the water, using what they had learnt the day before and being given extra tips by the instructors. After a lunch of leftover bolognese and sandwiches, one final powerful session on the water in near planning conditions gave a brilliant finish to the weekend.
An awesome weekend was had by everyone, with everyone agreeing they were better at windsurfing than they were before. Massive thanks go to Ricci from UWE and Becca from Bath for instructing, Big Mark from Wimbleball for being so flexible and helpful, the Bristol committee and especially Matt Saunders from Bristol for making it all happen.
